The
New Jersey Band Conference announces a Jazz Ensemble
Competition on Thursday, May 1, at The College of New
Jersey. The top two bands will share a concert with the
Jazz Knights of West Point. A limited number of bands
will be chosen to compete for this honor. Please read
further for application information and contest rules

Summary
All
interested schools must submit a recording of three pieces.
These
recordings will be evaluated by 3 independent adjudicators
who will
choose 10 bands to be invited to compete in the final
competition. The
final competition will be held on May 1, in Kendall Hall on
the Campus
of The College of New Jersey. From this group, two bands
will be chosen
to perform on the first half of an evening GALA concert that
will
feature the Jazz Knights from West Point. The final
competition is free
and open to the public and the evening GALA concert is free
to all of
the competition’s participants.
Application
Procedure and Contest Rules
Preliminary Round
*
The Application fee for the preliminary round is $75.
* Each applicant must submit recordings of 3 pieces, the
choice of
pieces is entirely at the discretion of each director
(contrasting
pieces are recommended but not required.)
* Recorded selections must be submitted on CD.
* Each selection must be completely unedited, made in 1
take. (The 3
selections need not have been recorded consecutively.)
* The total time for all 3 selections should not exceed 20
minutes,
each selection should have its own track.
* The Application and accompanying CD must be postmarked by
March
24, 2008.
* Notification of the of the outcome of the preliminary
round will
be made on March 31, 2008.
* The scoring results from the preliminary round will have
no effect
on the final competition.
* The scoring results will be withheld from all participants
until
after the conclusion of the concert.
Final
Competition
*
The fee for participating in the final round will be $300,
due on April 24 (1 week before the competition.)
* Finalists will be assigned a performance time determined
by random
selection.
* The first band will perform at 12:00pm, the last at 5:30
pm. The order of contestants will be chosen by random
selection.
* Performances may not exceed a total of 20 minutes.
* The choice of pieces is entirely at the discretion of each
director. Bands are not required to perform the same
material as on the recorded preliminary submission.
* The two bands with the highest aggregated scores from the
3 judges will be declared the winners.
* The winning bands will perform at 7:30 and 8:00 pm and may
perform up to 25 minutes of music.
* In addition to selecting two winning bands, the judges
will be permitted to award “Excellence Awards” to any or
all performers who are found to be truly “Outstanding.”
There will be no pre-determined number or types of
excellence awards. Rather, the adjudicators will recognize
those soloists and/or sections that they feel represent the
highest level of achievement for high school musicians.
Adjudicating
Rules
*
The preliminary round (CD recordings) will be adjudicated by
3 out-of-state expert judges.
* The 3 judges will work independently of each other and
remain anonymous to all parties until after the conclusion
of the GALA.
* The judges will score each band using the same scoring
system that will be used at the final competition.
* The 10 bands with the highest aggregated scores from all 3
judges
will be selected for the finals.
* A summary of all scores from the preliminary round will be
made available to all participants after the conclusion of
the GALA concert. Each band will be identified by number
only.
* The final round will be adjudicated by 3 expert judges who
will each complete a score sheet for each band. The judges
will be permitted to communicate with one another during the
competition.
* The two bands with the highest aggregated scores from all
3 judges
will be declared the winners.
* A summary of all scores from the final round will be made
available to all participants after the conclusion of the
GALA concert. Each band will be identified by number only.
* The judges will award “Excellence Awards” to any
performers who are agreed to be truly “Outstanding.”
